DOT Physicals &

Care for Drivers

We provide DOT physicals and offer options to establish primary care if you do not currently have a provider. Telehealth visits are available for drivers traveling

on the road.

A DOT Physical Exam is a medical examination required by the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) for commercial motor vehicle (CMV) drivers. The purpose is to ensure drivers are physically and mentally capable of safely operating commercial vehicles.

The exam must be performed by a Certified Medical Examiner (CME) who is listed on the National Registry of Certified Medical Examiners.

Drivers who:

• Operate a commercial vehicle requiring a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) for those traveling on the road with acute illnesses or needs for established patients

• Glasses or contacts (if worn)

• Hearing aids (if used)

• CPAP compliance reports (if diagnosed with sleep apnea)

• Blood sugar logs or insulin documentation (if applicable)

Benefits of Offering DOT Physicals in a Primary Care Practice

For family medicine and primary care clinics, offering DOT physicals is a valuable service because it:

• Provides convenient, same-day certification for commercial drivers.

• Helps drivers stay compliant with federal regulations.

• Gives drivers the opportunity to establish ongoing primary care if they do not

  already have a healthcare provider.

• Allows management of chronic conditions such as hypertension or diabetes that may affect DOT certification.

• Can be combined with telehealth follow-up visits for drivers who spend extended periods on the road.

This makes DOT physicals not only a regulatory requirement but also an opportunity to improve the long-term health of commercial drivers while keeping them safely on the road.
